Music Quiz Du Jour - ManUre Special Edition

4 min read

Music, football – two things we like at tshirtme.co.uk This week’s music quiz takes the opportunity to point and laugh at the worlds shittest soap opera, ‘Manchester United’. Owned by Americans who bought it with borrowed money and make the club itself pay the interest, as well as paying themselves huge ‘management fees’ and dividends. Part owner Jimmy Ratters is so popular he has to live in Monaco to get away from the vitriol he gets from fans, but I’m sure the £4 billion he saved in tax when he moved there more than compensates for being less popular than anthrax at a wind tunnel convention. Sometimes it is nice just to agree on something – they truly are the most dismal shitshow since Tony Blair and Ali Campbell sat down to plan ‘peace’ in the middle east by bombing the vajazzle out of Iraq. Enjoy.

  1. Sir Alex Ferguson was Manchester United's manager for 9,134 days, from November 6, 1986, until his retirement on May 19, 2013. What was number one when he was appointed?

“I Should be so Lucky” by Kylie Monogue

“Caravan of Love” by The Housemartins

    "The Final Countdown" by Europe

“The Chicken Song” by Spitting Image

School disco favourite ‘The Final Countdown’ was atop the charts when Fergie entered the chat. Fun fact: the keyboard riff started life as the walk-on music for the band, and was turned into a single when the band had run out of all other ideas for riffs.

  1. And when he left after 1500 games?

    “Royals” by Lorde

"Get Lucky" by Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams

    “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus

“Lets Get Ready To Rumble” by PJ and Duncan

Those Daft Punks were getting all kinds of funky with Pharrell and Nile Rodgers when Fergie bowed out. 2013 really was a good year.

  1. United have (so far) had 33 managers in total. What was the lead track from the self-titled album by Swiss electro-ambient band ‘33’?

    Out The Door

    Hurry

    Later

    Do It Again

‘Hurry’ opened the slim, elegant work by 33. Soundtrack to Utd’s approach to managerial change?

  1. Utd look likely to replace Carrick with Eddie Howe. Who had a hit with “Nice Guy Eddie” in 1996?

    Dreadzone

    Sleeper

    Curve

    Eddie Hitler

Ah, Louise from Sleeper… a whole generation of indie fans will make a funny face and need to be alone for a bit when you mention her name. Now a very talented author, which given the brilliance of her lyrics is no surprise.

  1. “Come on You Reds" is a song recorded by the 1994 Man Utd squad, written and produced by which rock group?

    Def Leppard

    Saxon

    Iron Maiden

    Status Quo

Four-chord specialists The Quo were lucky enough to record this slice of musical heaven. Maiden would have done a better job.

  1. Which footballer, referenced in the 2006 song ‘Ali in the Jungle’ by The Hours, nearly left his club for United in 1996?

    Vinnie Jones

    Tony Adams

    Tony Cascarino

    Matt Le Tissier

Good ol’ Tony Adams, who managed to cheat death when he crashed his car when over 4 times the drink drive limit. And we thought Strictly was the worst thing he’d ever done…

  1. Jose Mounrinho started his football career as a translator for Bobby Robson at Sporting CP and Porto. Which of these is not an album by San Francisco rock band Translator?

    Heartbeats and Triggers

    Evening of the Harvest

    Big Green Lawn

    The Anger Ether

'The Anger Ether' is an in-gestation EP by Devon-based musician Stories and Storms. You’ll never hear of him again either.

  1. SAF was the longest serving manager in English football history. Which song released during his tenure is played on an eternal loop in a hut in the Namib desert, powered by solar batteries?

    “Africa” by Toto

“Love is All Around” by Wet Wet Wet

“Walking on Sunshine” by KC and the Sunshine Band

“Beds are Burning” by Midnight Oil

Of course it’s 'Africa' by Toto, which is the only song on an MP3 player placed on plinth in a hut in the desert. I hope the songwriter – Ibles Lorraines – is getting royalties.

  1. Bass- playing legend and Reds fan Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield was sadly lost to us all November 20, 2025, at the age of 63. Which of his songs is the walk-out song at Old Trafford?

    “Made of Stone”

    “This is the One”

    “Country Girl”

    “In a State”

“This is the One” – what a tune. What a guy. What a loss.

  1. United have sacked 11, or possibly 12, managers since 2013. Still the suckers think that the beast can be tamed. Who had a huge hit in 1996 with ‘Ready to Go’, which incidentally is what they call the NDA clause in every Utd managers contract?

    Curve

    Republica

    Black Grape

    Danzig

Female vocalist Saffron fronted Republica, whose brand of dance / metal crossover was way ahead of its time. Still rocking on the nostalgia circuit, still wearing those PVC outfits. Legend

Bonus question: Which band released a track explaining Utd’s approach to managerial appointments:

“There is the theory of the Moebius. A twist in the fabric space where time becomes a loop in which there is no escape. When we reach that point, whatever happened will happen again.”

Level 42

Orbital

Aphex Twin

The Prodigy

Writing electronic music that still sounds cutting edge 30 years later, Orbital are all the better for the fact they are two brothers called Phil and Paul.

How’d you score (or, as Utd put it, ‘How do you score’?):

Bruno, is that you?

The most common score at Old Trafford this season

Odds you’ll get on Eddie Howe at the helm this time next week

Million, the salary he’ll ask

Out of 10, the likelihood Eddie will be gone by May

The years Utd will wait for another title. Ah well…
